The function of the oil in a shock absorber is to
• absorb the landing shock.
• ensure the separator does not bottom.
• damp the rebound.
Nicolae Ciubotaru asking:
• i would say that the shock absorber has the role of absorbing the shock(ergo the name), at the same time, oil being uncompressible would rather damp the rebound allowed by the nitrogen in the strut.
